Welcome to the Lifestyle Accountant Community

Update: In August 2018, I made the tough decision to close our community platform to focus on growing the remote accounting jobs board, AccountantList. If you’d still like to be part of the Lifestyle Accountant community by contributing or showing your support, you can submit your remote accountant story or show some love by sharing how Lifestyle Accountant has helped you.

Three years ago, I started Lifestyle Accountant as a blog, documenting my journey from ditching the cubicle to achieving my ideal lifestyle.

Over that time, I eventually transformed it into what you might know it to be today: the ultimate resource to help accountants achieve the remote work lifestyle.

Before I started Lifestyle Accountant, there was no community for accountants like us (that I could find) who wanted to go off the traditional accounting path and try something different. You had to just search Google, read books, and figure it out on your own (what I did).

So I set out to share my journey, experiment different strategies, put myself out there, and connect with likeminded people. All so I could "scratch my own itch."

I've shared my insights, successes and failures along the way.

Over the past three years while this has always been a side-project, a major door opener for interesting opportunities, and an overall creative outlet for me - I've had days where I ask myself why should I keep working on Lifestyle Accountant, pouring so much heart and soul into it, and making no money.

Is it really worth it?

The majority of people who start a blog, end up burning out even before they make it their first year. And while I've taken several blogging breaks, the one thing that keeps me going is the emails and messages I get from accountants who share things like this:

"Really great blog and I've been using it to form my strategy for starting a side business."

this:

"You hit a tremendous number of pain points I'm experiencing right now at my regular accounting job. Definitely trying to pursue the freelance accountant lifestyle."

...and this:

"Congratulations on securing the lifestyle you desire within the accounting field! I appreciate the advice and resources you have provided on your site on how to do the same. Thanks!"

Reflecting on these messages, it became clear I have something that's working.

But I no longer wanted to push content out there wondering if readers were taking action or getting discouraged later on.

That's why I decided to launch the Lifestyle Accountant community.

It's for ambitious and engaged accountants who want to connect with likeminded peers, sharing challenges, problems, and of course, their sucesses.

Lifestyle Accountant is the first true community based website built by and for accountants wanting to transition to the remote work lifestyle.

To be clear, this is not another LinkedIn Group, Facebook Group, or forum - I didn't want our community to be lumped in with the rest of those.

When you join our community, you won't be spending countless hours scrolling or searching through content, only to come across some spammy ad, sales pitch, or some distraction to keep you clicking.

This is my life's work and I want something that will exist and continue on even after I'm gone.

Why I started this community

A year ago, when I attended The Entrepreneur House in Chiang Mai, Thailand, it transformed my outlook on the profession and ignited a fire inside, I didn't know existed in me.

It's also where I sat down and wrote, The Ultimate Guide To Finding Remote Accounting Jobs - and received amazing feedback from it.

After I returned from Thailand, not only did I miss the amazing food and exotic surroundings, I greatly missed my daily routine working on my passion project, having deep conversations, and the overall sense of finding my "tribe".

The great thing about the other members of The Entrepreneur House was their willingness to help one another, provide feedback, take time out of their busy schedules to grab a coffee and help with the challenges each were facing.

I went to Thailand without a business. I had just a few ideas I wanted to explore but I left with more clarity and focus on what I should be doing -  building a community for accountants like us.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Jim Rohn

It started with creating a Facebook Group. I invited accountants I met over the years, chatted with over the phone, and readers who enjoyed my blog. It was a place for likeminded accountants to come together and have discussions around similar values around work and life.

And before the Facebook Group turned one year old, I was already evaluating different platforms and business models to help grow our community. I became increasingly frustrated with the user experience of Facebook Groups and knew it wasn't the place that would best serve us.

As it was nice to add new members daily, until we reached almost 400, I noticed the quality of engagement was not going up. It was hard to screen for quality members.

And while making a change like this is never easy, I was confident this new platform would provide a superior experience.

The feedback has been incredible and it only drives me to keep delivering more value to our community everyday.

Here's what some of our members have to say about how our community has positively impacted their lives:

You have become my top to-go resource. I can't believe I didn't find you sooner! I love the inspiration you provide. Seems we are many in the industry who aspire to get out from behind the desk, the 9-5, a better lifestyle, OR who just feel that we can contribute value to a much greater extent by exploring other options - like going out on our own! Your content/resources help lay out the possibilities - so thank you!"

Rosy Conde

"After working in the traditional corporate world since college, I'm happy to be among fellow 'accountepreneurs'. While I'm new to this community, I love hearing others' similar stories as we start and scale our businesses."

Mayur Vyas, CPA, Startup CFO

"I found the perfect job for me by being a member of the Lifestyle Accountant community. It's great to collaborate with other modern day accountants who are embracing technology and creating a life on their own terms."

Sarah Bowden

"I have really enjoyed being one of the first members of this amazing community of accountants. Have enjoyed reading the posts and questions, getting to know my peers and realizing we all share the same spirit, similar values, and face the same struggles. The job section offers up one of best resources for finding remote or virtual accounting positions with real companies offering real jobs and are leaders in revolutionizing our industry. It really is the first site devoted to accountants that embrace the new technologies and dare to color outside the lines."

Debbie Lollar, CPA, Controller

"I’m fairly new to this community, however, I have benefited from it greatly so far. There is something inspiring about being among like-minded individuals. I thought my idea of being a “not your typical” accountant was abstract and crazy but I realize now that it isn’t and it actually the future of accounting. I love hearing others stories and seeing others success...it encourages me to continue on this right path for my career as an accountant. Such an amazing community!"

Erika Munson

"Information about working flexibly or remotely is plentiful - if you're a developer. If you're an accountant or CPA there are very few resources and it can be a nightmare to sort genuine career opportunities from scams. Fortunately, Jeff had already trodden that path, figured out what works and was ready to share quality information. Now with this community he's enabled a place where you can meet other accountants with the same goals and objectives, which is like gold dust."

Neil Meyrick

"I’m a current corporate controller that used to own my own accounting consulting business and am looking to get back into the independent lifestyle and am starting the steps to do so. I use the posts in this community for insight on other peoples success or struggles currently and getting tips on restarting my own independence and will also share my experiences if I can help someone else. Thank you for putting this together."

Traci Marshall, Controller

“I found out about the Lifestyle Accountant community through a friend and it really was a godsend. First of all, it was great to find a tribe that I had so many things in common with. On top of that, it turned out to be a GREAT place to find a business partner. I know it sounds dramatic to say that something as simple as joining an online community like this can be life changing... but my life has certainly changed for the better since joining Lifestyle Accountant.”

Jeremiah Kovacs, Amazon Accounting Specialist

"Jeff's Lifestyle Accountant website provided inspiration and insight as I thought about how to truly achieve my lifestyle goals in the accounting profession. The Lifestyle Accountant community takes the next step in helping to realize these goals more efficiently. It is a great resource for discussing and collaborating with people pursuing similar paths. You can save a lot of time and effort by connecting and learning from other people. I'm looking forward to seeing this community grow!"

Michael Mellow, CPA

"I believe you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. This community is the perfect way to find like-minded people who are changing the status-quo in accounting. After 4+ years working remotely, I can attest to the fact that it has lots of challenges that are different from traditional 9-5 work. Knowing where to find support when it gets tough is crucial. Thank you, Jeff, for having the vision to put together this community. We will all rise together!"

Megan Lewczyk, CPA, Location Independent Entrepreneur

“I am thrilled to have found this group. The resources and ideas are so inspiring. I have dreamed of being able to work independently from home for awhile now but always thought it wasn’t reasonable and employers in my area are not that progressive. Finding this group has inspired me to look further and research more to find opportunities if not make one myself. Thank you Jeff for all of your hard work in bringing us together and providing us with your experience.”

Thank you

What excites me the most about this community is that it won't just be about helping accountants become more successful — it’ll be a space where we can work together to advance the accounting profession, focus on collaboration over competition, create more career flexibility, build more inspired accounting leaders and make the accounting community a more connected place.
